Devlog #2: the first punch

The first prototype: one fighter, one thug, one street. And the most important question: do you feel the hit?

An enemy flies through the air after a kick

The first prototype was small on purpose: one fighter, one thug and a stretch of street. It had one goal: find out if you feel the hit.

So we went straight to the things you don’t see but you feel: the hit boxes and hurt boxes of every frame, that is where a punch strikes and where a body can be struck; the tiny stop that freezes the action when a hit lands; the push, the fall, the bounce off the ground.

They’re details of a few hundredths of a second, but they make the difference between a game you watch and a game you play. Every time we change a move, we check the boxes frame by frame.

Everything else came from that first punch: combos, grabs, throws.
