Devlog #1: an engine of our own

Before the game comes the engine: Atom 2.5D, written from scratch for 2.5D games, with its own editor.

Every side-scrolling brawler needs a few things done extremely well: big sprites that move smoothly, scenes with depth, hits you can feel. Instead of bending an engine made for something else, we decided to build one for the job.

That’s how Atom 2.5D was born: Vulkan graphics, 2D scenes with 3D elements, characters sorted in depth, dynamic lights, physics, audio, UI, C# scripting and a full editor with a scene hierarchy, inspector, animator and timeline.

The advantage is simple: when the game asks for something new, we add it to the engine. A heat haze effect, a new kind of shader node, a different way to slice sprites: no compromises, no waiting.

It’s the least visible part of the work, but it holds up everything else. In the next devlogs we’ll see what we built on top of it.
